Mainland won't stop until it's fully unified or people get together and say no in a comprehensible way.

They know they F’d up on that one , that’s why they’re still too scared to uncensor it.

We know how the Chinese government is. What I wonder is if anyone in Shenzhen got to see the huge demonstrations.

I don’t have anything positive to say. I wish I did... but the only family ties I have to Asia are through Central Asia, and China’s treatment of Hui and Uyghur are the only real lens I can see the country through.
I could draw some parallels , but it’s probably better I didn’t. I wish the best for Hong Kong, but regretfully, I just don’t see it happening.

I’m sorry that your view of China is tainted by the experiences of its Muslim territories--it’s really difficult to justify the extreme measures they use to “curb terrorism” there, and as a Han Chinese there is no way I can fully relate to their struggles. Thanks for sharing.

Hahaha, good one. That’s been the case since 1984 when Britain realised that they weren’t gonna be able to, uh, stick around.

The Mainland only knows how to Mainland, for better or worse. The HKSAR government should not Mainland just for the sake of kissing ass, but for many parties within, it’s the easy thing to do. While that’s
Sad with a capital S, many of
these are the same people who supposedly excelled under the colonial government. Good civil servants, not so good at being leaders.

I think what I’m trying to say is, the Chinese government will have its way regardless of how wrong it is, regardless of how nobody wants things to be that way. I’ve often tried to figure out what the “end game” is, and so far as I can tell, it’s just pure spite. I’ve always wanted to visit Hong Kong, and suppose I’ll need to get on it if I want to see it while it’s still something special and unique in this world. I do truly wish everybody there the best, but I can’t help but feel things are not going to work out in their favor.

At the root, China still operates on Cold War-era fear. Its end game is pretty straightforward IMO—to outlast the American influence in the Asia-Pacific region, and prevent any further encroachment of Western military installations (see Japan, Korea, Philippines, Guam, and for a short time Thailand ). This explains the way it handles Taiwan and HK, and its buildup of bases in the South China Sea. As for the Xinjiang and Tibet issues, that stems from lessons of the gradual collapse of the Soviet Bloc and the confrontational relationships that continue today (Russia and the US/EU fighting to influence the former Soviet territories, Muslim border territory instability, etc.).
Tl;dr China thinks the Western World is still hell-bent on containing its rise. How valid that fear is, that’s anyone’s guess.

I was in Taiwan for a bit while growing up. There was always some half-serious talk about reunification (cross-strait were actually warming up for a while) , followed by “let’s see what happens to HK.” Now ... ha .
I also know people with dual US-TW citizenship who planned to retire there (healthcare, cost of living) but now have doubts about how long Taiwan will actually be around and functional (800 lb gorilla, population aging out).

There is no practical reason for China to actually physically do anything, short of Taiwan inviting the US to establish a base. That is the ultimate event that China wants to prevent and that’s why they play all these political games against the ROC government.
Same with HK. The people are more worldly and easily align with more liberal cultures , need to do just enough to keep them from falling into the arms of the “biggest bully.” The US already occupies literally every other major East Asian country, plus they own Guam.
